Arolla pine wood sculpture, Bacchic allegory. (72cm high)
Description:
Beautifully carved Arolla pine wood sculpture depicting a cherub holding a bunch of grapes, which iconographically connects to the classical cult of the God Bacchus. The invention of covering the cherub's nudity with a cloth held by a shoulder strap is very elegant and of inventive value. The cherub rests on a faux rocky terrain that recalls the taste of Roman Baroque.
The carving is of Northern origin and datable to around the mid-eighteenth century.
The height of the work is 72cm.
