Foreign painter active in Rome
(mid-17th century)
Still life with bread, flowers and a painting
Oil on canvas, cm 77.5 x 100
Excellent condition
The painting is to be attributed to the Roman school and is probably due to a Northern European painter active in the Urbe. In the painting, on a table covered with an oriental carpet, are arranged a painting with a gilded frame, representing two men one of whom is holding a candle, a plate with loaves of bread and a vase of flowers in which we can recognize passionflowers. A green drape with golden edges also leans against the painting represented. The dark setting of the scene highlights the objects representing with skillful coloristic accents and a precious and naturalistic materiality.
