The painting depicts the dramatic scene of the Virgin embracing her lifeless son, newly taken down from the cross, one of the most intense subjects in Sacred Art.
The work is particularly evocative, painted in oil on canvas around the end of the 16th century by an Emilian master from the circle of Bernardino Campi, very likely executed in his workshop. The artist describes the scene with great emotional effectiveness and a notable sense of involvement, even though the faces of the protagonists maintain an expression of infinite sweetness, avoiding overly exasperated and bloody imagery. The choice of a composition with more serene tones, despite the tragedy of the event, is due to the request of the private client and the consequent use for domestic devotion.
The canvas is in excellent condition, relined in the 19th century, and set in a magnificent carved and gilded frame, typical of the 17th-century Emilia region.
