Nuremberg, Anton Wilhelm Mäuerl, c. 1720. Museum-quality relief bottle, finely ground with chinoiseries and motifs in the classical, floral, and zoomorphic taste. All enclosed by an opaque background frame in Bandstil (iconography typical of Mäuerl). Splendid early eighteenth-century work in perfect condition, without restoration and complete with stopper. The small localized black concretions visible in the photos are residues of wood/peat that appear in early eighteenth-century glass, due to the use of archaic kilns of the time. Height 25 cm, width 10 x 7 cm. Provenance: prestigious European noble private collection. Literature: Licht und Farbe, Rudolf von Strasser, Vienna Museum of Art History - chalice published on pages 238-239 -240. Brigitte Klesse, Glassammlung Helfried Krug (1965), p.184, no.168 Gustav Weiss, Gläserbuch (1966), p.167.
Anton Wilhelm Mäuerl was born in Wunsdiedel in 1672 and worked in London between 1699 and 1710. After that date, he is known to have worked in Nuremberg until 1730. He is considered to have been one of the main exponents of the Baroque floral and ribbon style, and is believed to have been the first German glass engraver to introduce the chinoiserie style. He is considered one of the best glass engravers of the German Baroque period. Some of his works are kept in major museums. Recently, a major auction house in the United Kingdom awarded a similar work attributed to him, but not of the quality of the one we are proposing. He died in Hersbruck in 1737. pp.235-238. For further comparative examples, see another work in the Lanna collection and now in the Museum of Applied Arts in Prague, illustrated by Gustav E. Pazaurek, 'Anton Wilhelm Mäuerl - Ein deutscher Glasschneider in London', p.11 and 12. See also the bottle illustrated by Michael Kovacek, Glas aus 5 Jahrhunderten (2011), pp.16-17.
