Marshal Ney Napoleonic Bronze Sculpture by Giuseppe Grandi
Description:
Marshal Ney Bronze Sculpture by Giuseppe Grandi. Patinated bronze cast sculpture depicting the Napoleonic Marshal Ney. Of Italian manufacture, it is a multiple, of good workmanship and patina, datable to the first half of the 1900s and bears the inscription NEY on the front of the base.
The original from 1874, which inspired several foundries, is kept at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Milan; the original work is by the sculptor Giuseppe Grandi (1843-1894), one of the major exponents of the Lombard Scapigliatura movement.
Marshal Ney is standing, dressed in uniform and with his saber at his left side. He wears a long coat with military epaulettes. On his head he wears a bicorne. Furthermore, the general seems to rest thoughtfully. His pose, in fact, does not express his indomitable character. Rather, he seems reflective and caught in a moment of intimacy.
The sculpture has some casting burrs but is in good overall condition.
The subject is one of the best known of Giuseppe Grandi's sculptural production thanks to the fortune it has obtained in the numerous castings, mostly posthumous, present in various collections (including the Musée d'Orsay).
Period: circa 1930.
