Painting by G.B. Pittoni, from the first half of the 18th century, depicting the rest during the flight into Egypt.
The Madonna is in the center, seated, wrapped in a blue mantle and red dress, holding the Child Jesus in her arms. Saint Joseph is on the left: elderly, with a white beard, an ochre mantle and a blue tunic, in a pensive attitude. Above, two cherubs are visible, immersed in a luminous cloud. The figures are soft, illuminated by a warm light coming from above, and the color is rich, full-bodied, with ample drapery. The frame is very elaborate, gilded, richly carved: this also fully recalls the Baroque taste.
The painter was born in Venice in 1687. He came from a family of artists: his uncle Francesco Pittoni was also a painter and was probably his first teacher. Pittoni fully trained in the Venetian environment, which at the time was dominated by the great colorists: Tiepolo, Piazzetta, Ricci. He developed an elegant, soft, and luminous style, characterized by delicate and airy colors, harmonious compositions, idealized and sweet figures, and a generous use of pink and blue tones. He was very active especially in sacred and historical painting, genres in which he achieved great international success.
