Mother of God of the Burning Bush – Russian Icon, late 18th century  Translated
Description:
This extraordinary Russian icon of the Mother of God of the Burning Bush, from Vetka, an ancient center of Old Believers, dates to the late 18th century. Executed in egg tempera on panel, with a gold background, it represents one of the most profound and theologically dense subjects in the Orthodox tradition. The iconography originates from the passage in Exodus (3:2), where Moses contemplates the bush that burns without being consumed, a prophetic figure of the Virgin Mary, who encompasses the divine fire of the Incarnation within herself without being destroyed by it. In the center of the composition, the Mother of God with the Child is enclosed in an eight-pointed star, a symbol of the mystery of Christ's dual nature and the cooperation between grace and humanity. The red rhombus represents the divine fire, while the blue-green one symbolizes the Virgin's human purity. Around them, in a rich cosmic vision, are displayed the angels of the celestial hierarchies, the four evangelists, and various prophetic figures, including Moses and the prophet Ezekiel. At the top appears Christ in glory, the source of revelation. The Vetka school, known for its chromatic refinement and elaborate symbolism, lends a mystical luminosity to the work: the tones of red and blue intertwine in perfect balance, while the original gilding enlivens the entire surface. This icon of the Burning Bush is a masterpiece of visual theology, capable of uniting devotion, formal harmony, and spiritual depth.  Translated
