Christ Emmanuel – Russian Icon, 18th Century  Translated
Description:
This refined Russian icon of Christ Emmanuel, from Moscow and dating to the late 18th century, represents one of the highest expressions of late-Baroque Orthodox religious painting. Executed in egg tempera on panel, it measures 27 x 22 cm and retains its intense spiritual force intact. The young face of Christ, with wide and deep eyes, expresses divine serenity and eternal wisdom. The title "Emmanuel" – "God with us" – recalls Isaiah's prophecy (7:14) and emphasizes the salvific presence of the Incarnate Word. The Muscovite artist translates this theology into forms of great balance: the subtle chiaroscuro of the face and the delicate modeling of the cheeks convey a luminous and transfigured humanity. On the sides of Christ's bust are depicted two intercessory saints: on the left, Saint Simeon Stylites, a symbol of asceticism and incessant prayer, and on the right, Saint John the Warrior, protector of the faithful and defender of the faith. Both create a spiritual dialogue with the central figure, fitting into the theme of divine protection and the communion of saints. The golden palette, with warm tones and fine highlights, accentuates the symbolic value of the divine light radiating from the Redeemer's face. The work fully reflects the Muscovite tradition of the Old Believers, faithful to Byzantine canons and early spirituality. An icon of great theological and spiritual elegance, ideal for collectors and enthusiasts of sacred art.  Translated
