Mother of God "Joy of All Who Sorrow" – Russian icon, 18th century  Translated
Description:
The Russian icon of the Mother of God "Joy of All Who Sorrow" – 18th century – represents one of the most touching expressions of Orthodox spirituality. Made with egg tempera on wood panel, it measures 29 x 34 cm and is enriched by a splendid chased silver riza, from Saint Petersburg, decorated with blue cabochon stones that enhance its regal and sacred nature. The Virgin is depicted in half-figure, in the act of holding the Child Jesus with a tender and compassionate gesture. The expression of the face, sweet and melancholic, reflects the profound maternal participation in human suffering. The traditional title of this icon, "Joy of All Who Sorrow", alludes to the consoling function of the Mother of God, to whom the Russian people turned in times of illness, affliction or danger. The chased silver riza does not only have an ornamental function: it expresses the divine light that envelops the Virgin and the Son, a sign of their eternal presence and intercession. On the sides appear two saints in prayer, perhaps the patrons of the donor or figures linked to the local cult. The work, dating back to the 18th century, testifies to the high technical level of the workshops of Saint Petersburg, where miniaturistic precision and profound spiritual sensibility were combined. The richness of the materials and the chromatic delicacy place this icon among the best examples of Russian sacred art of the late Baroque period. For the refinement of workmanship and devotional significance, this Russian icon of the Mother of God is ideal for collectors, scholars and lovers of Byzantine and Orthodox art.  Translated
