Christ Pantocrator – Russian icon, 19th century  Translated
Description:
The Russian icon Christ Pantocrator – 19th century, Ryazan school, is an intense representation of the Lord as Pantocrator, meaning "Ruler of All". Made with egg tempera on wood, it measures 35.5 x 30.5 cm and belongs to the refined pictorial tradition of the Ryazan region, known for its sobriety of tones and high quality of faces. Christ is depicted frontally, in a solemn pose, with his right hand raised in the gesture of blessing and his left holding the open Book of Gospels, on which the words read: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Mt 11:28). The direct, calm, and penetrating gaze conveys majesty and mercy, inviting prayer and contemplation. The chromatic balance, dominated by deep reds and dark greens, and the golden highlights on the garments highlight the technical mastery of the Ryazan school, active in the 19th century. The face of Christ, modeled with precise and soft lines, represents the perfect union of divinity and humanity, a central theme of Byzantine-Russian art. The green background, framed by a border decorated in gold and blue, creates an effect of spiritual depth and recollection. The panel retains its original patina, a testament to a long devotional history. This work, an expression of the Orthodox tradition, testifies to the continuity of worship and fidelity to the iconographic canons that have transmitted the living presence of the Incarnate Word for centuries. A Russian icon of Christ Pantocrator of notable theological intensity and formal beauty, ideal for collectors and scholars of Russian sacred art.  Translated
