Icon of Saints Simonas, Gurij, and Abibos – Russian Icon, Moscow, late 19th century
Description:
This small, finely executed icon depicts the three Russian martyr saints: Simonas, Gurij, and Abibos, venerated in the Russian Orthodox tradition as martyrs and confessors of the faith. The three figures are depicted frontally, each with a silver halo and meticulously detailed liturgical vestments, enhanced by a splendid chased silver riza, precision-crafted by Moscow goldsmiths in the late 19th century. The saints are characterized by individualized features: the serene face of Simonas, the long ascetic beard of Gurij, and the youthful face of Abibos. Their hands make benevolent gestures or hold scrolls, symbols of the Word and their evangelizing work. In the background, a delicate engraved floral decoration further embellishes the composition, underscoring its devotional and ornamental character. The egg tempera technique used for the faces and hands imparts expressiveness and spiritual warmth, in stark contrast to the sheen of the silver overlay. The balance between painting and metal attests to the skill of the Russian iconographers and goldsmiths active in the late 1800s. Despite its modest size, this icon emanates a strong spiritual charge and is suitable for both personal contemplation and refined collecting, representing a synthesis of faith, art, and craftsmanship.
