This Russian icon of Saint Michael the Archangel, from the Vladimir region and dating to the early 19th century, is a perfect example of the complex eschatological and triumphant symbolism of Orthodox art. Executed in egg tempera on wood, it measures 35.8 x 32 cm.
Saint Michael is depicted at a gallop on a flaming red horse, in a solemn and regal gesture, typical of angelic representations of defense and victory. The Archangel carries five fundamental symbols, each laden with theological meaning:
The trumpet, with which he announces the final Judgment;
The sword, symbol of justice and divine power;
The closed book, which holds the mysteries of God;
The censer, with which he purifies the world through prayer;
And the rainbow, a celestial bridge between the created and the uncreated.
In the upper part of the icon, God Emmanuel appears among the clouds, young and glorious, blessing: he is the pre-eternal Logos guiding celestial intervention in human history. From heaven, His will is reflected in the action of the Archangel, the divine messenger and warrior.
Beneath the horse, a city submerged in the sea is visible, symbolizing the punishment inflicted upon the forces of evil, and next to it a flaming mace, an allegory of divine justice striking iniquity. To the sides of the scene, as intercessors, are depicted Saint John the Baptist and Saint Anastasia.
