In the most typical tradition of Neapolitan art, the large canvas fancifully depicts the joyous episode of the three Wise Men who bring gifts to the Child from the Far East, guided by the Star of Bethlehem.
It is the most joyous and fascinating moment in the life of Christ, seeing the three Magi paying homage to the baby Jesus and prostrating themselves with devotion before the King of Kings.
The author describes the scene with markedly fairy-tale tones, and by using particularly vivid colors, manages to create a magical atmosphere that befits the extraordinary event.
Neapolitan artists between the 17th and 18th centuries were the undisputed masters in depicting events relating to the Nativity, with the production of magnificent canvases, sculptures, as well as the famous Nativity scenes.
Our canvas is a work from the late 17th century executed by an artist from the circle of Luca Giordano, who, together with the various Solimena, de Mura, Preti and de Matteis, marked a magical moment for sacred Neapolitan art.
