Pair of 18th Century Majolica Plates with Carnation Decoration
Description:
Pair of Majolica Plates with Carnation Decoration. The classic "carnation" decoration develops in the center, with the dominant flower on a long sinuous stem, executed in vibrant polychrome colors of blue, brown, yellow, red, orange, and green. The central motif is enclosed by a narrow band of lattice segments alternating with flowering branches, which delimits the transition to the rim, adorned with two opposing floral compositions. Two painted fillets mark the edge, completing the refined composition.
Condition: Good; one of the two plates has undergone old restorations on the edge and bottom as can be seen from the darker greenish color documented in the photo gallery.
The "carnation" decoration is one of the distinctive features of 18th century Faenza production, in particular of the Ferniani Manufactory, active in Faenza from the end of the 17th century. This motif, inspired by oriental models and reinterpreted locally, was very successful throughout the peninsula and remains today one of the most elegant expressions of Romagna majolica.
