Resurrection of Christ with the Twelve Feasts – Russian Icon, 19th century  Translated
Description:
The Russian icon "Resurrection of Christ with the Twelve Feasts" – 19th century, Cholui school, is a work of harmony and theological complexity, made with egg tempera on wood and measuring 31 x 27 cm. Hailing from Cholui, one of the most prestigious iconographic centers of central Russia, this work reflects the excellence of nineteenth-century religious painting, where the precision of drawing is combined with intense spirituality. In the central register, the risen Christ dominates the composition in the scene of the Descent into Limbo, surrounded by the righteous freed from the tomb. Around, arranged with theological rigor, the Twelve Great Feasts narrate the fundamental episodes of the Gospel: from the Nativity of the Virgin to the Annunciation, from the Nativity of Christ to the Transfiguration, up to the Dormition of the Mother of God. Each scene is painted with extraordinary narrative attention: the delicate faces, the stylized architecture, and the luminous colors testify to the hand of an expert painter, trained according to the tradition of the Cholui masters, famous for their meticulousness and iconic clarity. The border is adorned with polychrome geometric motifs and golden fillets that frame the entire panel, giving it a visual rhythm and solemnity that recalls Byzantine liturgy. The arrangement of the scenes creates a visual dialogue between the Paschal mystery at the center and the main events of the life of Christ and the Virgin, inviting contemplation of the history of salvation. A Russian icon of the Resurrection of Christ that combines theological rigor, artistic elegance, and spiritual intensity. An ideal work for collectors and scholars of Orthodox sacred art.  Translated
