This rare jewel painted on panel depicts a suggestive wedding scene rich in characters and references to classical antiquity, in a typically mythological context. The two spouses are united in the ritual by an elderly priest under a splendid architecture and receive a crown of white flowers on their heads.
a large burning brazier of Arcadian taste is near the stack of wood ready for a propitiatory sacrifice to the newlyweds. The idyllic landscape that can be glimpsed in the distance among the trees is of remarkable beauty.
The excellent condition of the painting highlights the exquisite quality of the work and the vivacity of the splendid colors used by the Author.
The work is signed " J.F. Franse f." lower right on the stones of a base supporting the sacrificial pyre.
After careful research we have identified the Author of the work as Jacob France whose rare works have appeared on the market in very few auction sessions.
One of these is practically identical to ours and depicts a very similar scene with the same precise measurements. (See "artprice" document).
In a Sotheby's auction in 2014, some drawings by this artist, probably operating in northern France, in addition to the signature bore the date 1723, documenting the period of activity for certain.
The work is painted on a walnut panel in one piece and is free of cracks and malformations without restoration or retouching to the painting.
It is complete with the original gilded frame.
