Mimmo Rotella, born Domenico Rotella, was an Italian artist of Calabrian origins and a major figure in the art of the second half of the 20th century, associated with the Nouveau Réalisme movement and international Pop Art. The artist became particularly known for his use of torn advertising posters transformed into works of art. He indeed gained immediate fame for his "décollages," a technique he first experimented with in Rome when, walking through the city, he saw detached and torn posters and took them to his studio to transform them. In 1953, Rotella realized that painting no longer greatly interested him, and he clearly moved closer to the concept of the advertising poster as an artistic expression. Rotella thus became part of Nouveau Réalisme.
