This magnificent depiction of Saint Catherine, sumptuously dressed in a damask dress in pink velvet and gold brocade, can be attributed to the celebrated master of the Roman Baroque, Antiveduto Grammatica, and his workshop.
The Author's pictorial ability is evident in presenting the Saint with clothing that stands out for its elegance and refinement of execution.
Noteworthy is the volumetric rendering with a marked use of light and shadow that highlights the folds of the garments and the movements of the hands.
The face of the Saint recalls the facial typology used by Domenichino, a frequent visitor to Grammatica's Roman workshop, as well as Caravaggio.
The figure, in a solemn and majestic pose, stands out from the dark background and is illuminated by the light coming from the left, which meets the gaze of the noble protagonist.
The Author prefers to associate the iconographic attribute of the sword, with which the Martyr was beheaded, to the Saint rather than the wheel of martyrdom, which is more commonly depicted, contributing to offering a more important, almost regal image of Saint Catherine.
The painting has been perfectly relined and is in excellent condition, complete with a splendid finely carved and gilded frame.
