Aphrodite must have been truly desperate when she confided to Themis her despair at seeing that her son Cupid always remained a child. The wise Themis replied that the god of Love would never grow up until he knew the love of a brother. Thus, Aphrodite and Ares begot Anteros. The two brothers became inseparable, and the firstborn grew up. Cupid maintained the task of shooting his arrows to ignite passion and drive the pursuit of beauty. Anteros protected reciprocal love. But if Anteros moved away, Cupid would turn back into a child. Because Love, in order to grow, needs to be reciprocated, needs awareness and a shared journey.
