Walnut bench chest with wrought iron crosses - Northern Italy, late 16th - early 17th century. Small bench chest in solid walnut wood, reinforced and decorated with striking wrought iron hardware, consisting of long lancet-shaped plates and forged studs, many of which are pierced with a cross or engraved with religious motifs. These details suggest an original destination in a clerical or convent environment, perhaps as vestry furniture or as a chest for ecclesiastical furnishings. Dating: late sixteenth - early seventeenth century Materials: solid walnut and wrought iron Measures: width 92 cm height 58 cm maximum depth at the legs 48 cm Condition and interventions: The central structure of the furniture is authentic, with an antique patina and a used surface. Some parts have been replaced over time: a bottom board and, in all likelihood, also the lid, renovated in the nineteenth century; the lid hinges are more recent (modern). The legs show old alterations, probably also from the nineteenth century, but consistent in material and character with the whole. Presence of slight cracks and oxidation of the iron compatible with age. Overall good and stable conditions. Remarks: An example of remarkable charm and archaic character, representative of the rustic Renaissance production of Northern Italy.
