The painting is in excellent condition.
This superb panel depicting the Virgin holding the Child and Young Saint John is a typical example of Lombard Renaissance painting inspired by Leonardo da Vinci.
Indeed, the great genius of Leonardo, with his arrival in Milan towards the end of the 15th century, contributed significantly to the rebirth of painting in Lombardy, influencing a large group of artists with his unmistakable style.
Among the most talented followers of his pictorial creed, his pupil Giovan Pietro Rizzoli, known as Giampietrino, certainly stands out. With some of his works, he equaled the great Master, perfectly capturing the characteristics of his characters, full of mystery and veiled esotericism.
Our panel embodies all the peculiarities of his works, expressing in the best possible way the refined taste of this group of Leonardesque school artists.
The very elegant posture of the Virgin and the almost ambiguous play of the two Children kissing, also expressed in Nordic works, are a subject already elaborated by Rizzoli and evidently the fruit of a painter from his entourage.
The work is painted on a single poplar panel, as was customary in the best workshops of the 16th century.
