Polychrome wooden sculpture depicting Saint Teresa of Avila, Spain late 17th early 18th century
Description:
Fine polychrome wooden sculpture of excellent workmanship, depicting Saint Teresa of Avila. The Saint, a teacher but also the founder of the Order of Discalced Carmelites, is represented in an inspired attitude, in the act of holding an open book bearing the inscription "Aut mori aut pati", suffer or die, as she used to exclaim, referring to the death and resurrection of Christ.
The work stands out for the refined craftsmanship of the drapery, characterized by gilded finishes and subtle striped engravings, and for the vivid expressiveness of the face, which intensely conveys the ecstatic dimension of the Saint. Octagonal wooden base with gilded profiles.
Height: 75 cm
