Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine Painting
Description:
Oil on chestnut panel. Central European school of the 16th century. The traditional scene depicts the Child Jesus, in the arms of the Mother with whom he exchanges a tender glance, preparing to slip the wedding ring on the finger of Catherine of Alexandria, a symbol of the mystical marriage that the young saint wanted to contract with the Divine Child. The saint is depicted, as per her usual iconography, with a crown on her head and dressed in royal clothes and jewels, to emphasize her princely origin. The painting is probably the work of a Flemish author who looks to the Italian models of the 15th-16th centuries. The panel shows signs of previous restoration.
