Vienna, circa 1820, Biedermeier period, extremely rare intact sewing table with pincushion and bobbin holder
Description:
Vienna, circa 1820, Biedermeier period, intact sewing table with pincushion and bobbin holder. Cherry feather veneered, on a maple and fir wood frame. Original animal bone bobbin support. Pincushion with original upholstery, two intact drawers with original handles, intended to hold needles and bobbins. In virtually intact condition, with patina, with shellac finish applied by hand. With sober elegance, it is an extremely rare piece of furniture in this type, which is different from the more common larger work tables, now only present perhaps in some museum of the Republic of Austria. It is precisely a furnishing/collectible curiosity of significant museum importance. This is also because it fully expresses the philosophy of life in the early Viennese Biedermeier period. In a period, that of the restoration, of rich tranquility, where order was guaranteed by a rigid state police apparatus, and the well-to-do early bourgeois of the time lived prioritizing traditional values, spending much time within the domestic walls. Women dedicated themselves to sewing using furnishings like the one proposed; men, in front of a secretaire, dedicated themselves to reading and writing or managing correspondence. Time passed peacefully in well-being, as long as, of course, the regime governed by Prince Clemens von Metternicht was not opposed and one did not take an interest in politics. This rigid system lasted until the revolutionary movements of the 1840s. Measurements: 85.5 cm high, 34 cm wide, depth at the base 34 cm, 14.5 cm on the top. In accordance with the provisions of the New Code of Cultural Heritage, the selling company provides, concurrently with the sale, a detailed written photographic guarantee of originality and provenance of the works sold. The data with which the works are described and then contained in the written guarantees are expressed determinations resulting from accurate and documented technical/historical/artistic investigations, even of expert appraisal.
