A pair of fascinating Chinese export reverse mirror paintings. The paintings were done on glass, painting in negative, and then completed with a mercury mirrored background. The two paintings depict portraits of the Emperor and Empress, with opposing gazes, depicted in rich and elaborate clothing. The paintings are accompanied by their original wooden frames, richly crafted and fretworked. The frames depict scenes with landscapes, characters and plant elements that reflect scenes from Chinese tradition and myth. These are curious objects of great decoration and quality, able to furnish any environment with a touch of oriental antiquity.Chinese manufacture, Qing dynasty, late 19th century.
