Magnificent French Empire Style Abattant Secretary Desk, in Fine Flamed Mahogany and Gilt Bronzes, 19th Century Object Description: We present a splendid example of a French secrétaire à abattant (fall-front desk), dating back to the 19th century. Materials and Workmanship: Wood: Made entirely of flamed mahogany (acajou flammé), the furniture boasts a rich and vibrant grain, with butterfly or book-matched patterns that create a remarkable visual impact (particularly visible on the front and inside the compartment). The deep, warm color of the mahogany is enhanced by a shellac polishing, which highlights its preciousness. Structure: The solid structure is rectangular in shape, topped by an elegant Belgian black marble top, which adds a touch of refinement and practicality. Gilt Bronzes: The gilt bronze details are essential and refined, in line with the aesthetic canons of the Empire style. They include: Lateral Columns: Two imposing smooth solid columns flank the structure, resting on circular plinth bases. Capitals and Bases: The columns are enriched at the top and bottom with bronze capitals and bases finely chiseled with classic rosette and braid motifs, recalling classical architecture. Interior: The large drop front, once opened, serves as a spacious writing surface, covered in leather. The interior reveals a cleverly organized compartment, with a central shelf and a series of small mahogany drawers that offer space for stationery and documents. Two secrets are present. Functional Configuration: Upper Part: Features a large vertical drop-front panel (abattànt) that opens to reveal the writing area and the equipped interior. Lower Part: Below the drop front, the piece of furniture is completed by a series of three full-width drawers, offering additional space. Dimensions: 97 x 46 cm (84 cm open), height 143 cm Conditions: The furniture is in excellent general condition, consistent with its age and historical use.
