Christ in the House of Mary and Magdalene, 16th century
Description:
Oil on canvas painting, measuring 82 x 112 cm without frame and 100 x 130 cm with a coeval frame, depicting Christ in the House of Mary and Magdalene by the painter Francesco Bassano the Younger (Bassano del Grappa 1549 – Venice 1592), painted around 1570 and 1580. This fine, unpublished canvas, of remarkable executive quality, has significant merits with this dilated format, with the basket full of food, in the glimpse of the fireplace with this twilight background and a particular, delicate and very sweet light. We can notice how the brush is full of material that is expressed through a very accurate description of the characters both in the clothes and in their folds, in the sparkling of the dishes and metal containers and in the truly vivid colors of the characters' clothes. All characteristics of Francesco Bassano the Younger, the most talented among the sons and also the collaborators of Jacopo Bassano. A characteristic of Francesco, very evident in this painting, is the ability to render the gleams of light that wind through objects or people or the great concreteness in unfolding the work obtained through the light contrast that emphasizes the volumes, the pasty color and its energetic and confident brushstrokes that make his art and this painting truly majestic. The work, in my opinion, takes place in the decade between 1570 and 1580; in my opinion because there is a moment of close collaboration between the father Jacopo and Francesco, but where the qualities and characteristics that will make the painter unique in its kind are more evident. The paintings and art objects published here are my exclusive property and consequently are always available to be viewed in person, by appointment, in my exhibition venues located in Sanremo and Brescia.
