Description:
Elegant Chinese porcelain brush holder, known as bitong. Its cylindrical shape and white porcelain feature intricate cobalt blue underglaze designs. The inscriptions and images painted on the body of the brush holder tell a fascinating story. The text, written in traditional calligraphy, is a partial transposition of one of the most famous works of Chinese literature, the Ode to the Red Cliff by Su Shi. The images show a detailed landscape with characters. The piece is signed at the base with the (apocryphal) mark of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing dynasty, who reigned from 1662 to 1722.
