Pair of engravings – "Conspiracy of Catiline" and "Martyrdom of Saint Christopher"
Description:
Engraver: Toller Melchiorre (Belluno, active ca. 1830–1846) Drawings based on: Pomponio Amalteo and Giacomo (or Girolamo) Montagna Technique: burin engraving on laid paper Era: circa 1840 Dimensions: The Conspiracy of Catiline: cm 45.5 × 30.5 Martyrdom of Saint Christopher: cm 47 × 32 Description: Pair of 19th-century burin engravings, taken from famous Italian Renaissance pictorial models. Both prints are signed "M. Toller del. et inc.", and constitute translation prints, created for popular and collectible purposes in the first half of the 19th century. The first engraving depicts "The Conspiracy of Catiline. Lucius Junius Brutus incites the Roman people to revolt against Tarquin the Proud", according to a design by Pomponio Amalteo. The work is listed in the General Catalog of Cultural Heritage and documented at the Palazzo dei Nobili in Belluno. The second print illustrates the Martyrdom and transport of the decapitated body of Saint Christopher, inspired by a composition attributed to Montagna, with elements that recall the Mantegnesque scenic layout of the Ovetari Chapel. Printed on laid paper, the engravings show foxing, minor folds and slight browning, all compatible with age and technique. Sale: offered as a pair, but also available separately upon request. --- Historical-identity note: The engravings are the work of Melchiorre Toller, an engraver from Belluno active in the 19th century, linked to the figurative culture of his territory. The engraving of the Conspiracy of Catiline reproduces a composition kept in the Palazzo dei Nobili in Belluno, which no longer exists in its original form today. The engraving of the Martyrdom of Saint Christopher is based on a largely destroyed fresco in the Ovetari Chapel in Padua, making it a rare indirect historical testimony. For this reason, in addition to their graphic and decorative value, the prints also take on a documentary and identity value, particularly significant for those who have cultural ties with the city of Belluno and its artistic memory.
