The Right Path, 1887
Oil on canvas

"The painting illustrates the encounter between a richly dressed young knight and a beautiful commoner on a path in the Roman countryside. The anecdotal nature of the work is highlighted by the chosen title, "The Right Path," and by the broad gestures of the characters. The painter manages to make the scene eloquent especially through the meticulous descriptions of the facial expressions, which allow the viewer to fully understand the different personalities of the protagonists, in particular thanks to the juxtaposition between the proud gaze of the man on horseback and the serene and confident face of the girl."
