Carved and gilded frieze, Northern Italy, Charles X period, ca. 1820–1830
Description:
Carved wooden frieze, fully carved, probably in linden wood, with gold leaf and faux wood finish, datable to the Charles X period (ca. 1820–1830). The rich and well-balanced decorative motif is composed of foliate volutes, architectural elements, and a central medallion with a floral bouquet in relief. The carving features beautiful undercuts and careful workmanship, typical of decorative production from the Veneto or Lombardy area. Originally, the frieze was probably the upper crest of a mirror; today it can be enhanced as a doorway or decorative element above a doorframe. Overall good condition: it has some losses of the gilding preparation and small flaws in two carved elements, easily reintegrated. Dimensions: length 124 cm – maximum height 42 cm.
