August Riedel attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1820 onwards, where he proved to have an eye for color. He further developed his sense of color in Italy, where he moved in 1828, remaining there until his death. In his youth, he was a member of the Lukasbund, and in his maturity became an academician of San Luca. He had moderate success in Germany in the mid-19th century: his works are exhibited at the Neue Pinakothek in Munich and at the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
