Elegant polychrome majolica tray made in Bassano, dating back to the mid-18th century.
The plate, shaped and slightly lobed, features a refined decoration with floral compositions, obviously hand-painted with bright colors such as blue, yellow, green and red. The decoration, inspired by the naturalistic models in vogue at the time, is harmoniously distributed over the surface, with a more important lateral bouquet and secondary motifs scattered along the polilobate rim.
The ceramic production of Bassano del Grappa has ancient origins and became established in particular in the 17th and 18th centuries thanks to the Antonibon family, which transformed the city into a center of excellence for majolica. The works of the Bassano manufacture are distinguished by the quality of the mixture, the brilliance of the showcase and the pictorial decorations characterized by floral motifs, genre scenes and orientalizing inspirations.
Maiolica is a porous ceramic covered with a tin glaze which gives it a white and opaque surface, suitable for pictorial decoration. During the 18th century, Italian manufactures, and in particular that of Bassano, developed a decorative language characterized by floral and landscape motifs, often influenced by contemporary imported porcelains.
Pieces similar to the tray proposed here can be found in important museum collections, including the Bassano del Grappa Museum, which preserves a vast selection of Antonibon majolica, as well as the International Ceramics Museum of Faenza. Similar floral decorations can be found in other 18th century Bassano specimens, confirming the taste for naturalistic motifs and the lively chromatic palette.
