"Tolzer" Painted Cabinet in Teal Blue  Translated
Description:
Teal Blue Painted Cabinet Era: early 19th century Origin: Bavarian Alps Wood: Fir Measurements: H. 157 cm - W. 107 cm - D. 42 cm Description: "Tolzer" cabinet entirely painted in teal blue. The structure is solid, with two doors, with a rectilinear main body and beveled corners. The hinged doors are mounted on a frame that protrudes slightly from the vertical uprights and bevels. The decoration is performed using the traditional casein painting technique on wood, common in furniture from the Alpine area. The panels are richly ornamented with floral and symbolic motifs, including - hearts and flower vases, votive and auspicious symbols, often linked to weddings or dowries. - Stylized apples and tulips: recurring motifs in Central European popular iconography, full of meanings related to fertility and abundance. - Presence of geometric elements, such as squares and semicircular arches that frame the floral compositions. The color palette is dominated by warm and earthy tones: carmine red, ocher, slate blue and fir green, on a wooden background left partially visible. This type of cabinet was often used as a wardrobe or storage unit in homes in the Alpine area. The decoration was not purely aesthetic, but often had symbolic and apotropaic value (protection of the house and family).
