Frans Mortelmans (1865-1936) was born in Antwerp, Belgium, and studied at the "Des Beaux-Arts" school in Antwerp, where he later became a teacher. He then moved and became a teacher at the Berchem Academy and became its director.
Frans Mortelmans actively participated in the artistic societies that flourished in Flanders between the 19th and 20th centuries. He also participated in salons and various exhibitions in Antwerp, Mechelen, Ghent and Liege.
In 1903 he received official recognition in Belgium and one of his watercolors was acquired by the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp. In 1932 he was appointed Commander of the Order of Leopold.
