Lacquered and decorated wooden flap cabinet, Japanese style, 1950s The cabinet shown is a fine example of Italian furniture in the Japanese style, made in the 1950s. This piece combines Italian postwar craftsmanship with a strong Orientalist decorative influence, typical of the fashion of the time for exotic and decorative styles. Technical and stylistic description: Furniture type: Bureau/secrétaire with flap and riser. Epoch: 1950s. Origin: Italy. Materials: Black lacquered wood with oriental-themed gilt decorations, probably made with lacquer or tempera technique, imitation of Japanese urushi lacquer. Structure: Upper part with small drawers decorated with stylized bouquets of flowers on a black background. Central flap with oriental figurative scene, depicting traditional Japanese characters, bridges and landscapes. Domed lower part with highly detailed Chinoiserie-style architectural and natural decorations, including pagodas, rivers, boats and gardens. Legs: Curly in the Louis XV style, another classical element taken up in the Italian reinterpretation. Dominant colors: Glossy black, gold, touches of red and light green. Measurements: H 137 x W 129 x D 43 cm.
