Immaculate Conception, attributed to Pierre Puget, polychrome painted and gilded terracotta sculpture, 17th century
Description:
Immaculate Conception, attributed to Pierre Puget (Marseille 1620-1694), exceptional polychrome painted and gilded terracotta sculpture. The flowing drapery and the intense expressiveness of the face are linked to the sculptural tradition of Pierre Puget, the famous French artist active in Genoa in the second half of the 17th century. The work is mentioned as a possible sketch for the famous Immaculate Conception by Pierre Puget kept at the Albergo dei Poveri in Genoa and commissioned from Puget in August 1666 by Emanuele Brignole. Due to the quality of execution and compositional complexity, it could be a preparatory study for the large marble sculpture or, alternatively, a reduced version commissioned for private devotion by the same client. width cm. 100 height cm. 75
