Oil on canvas. French school of the second half of the 18th century. Probably the work of a follower of Claude Joseph Vernet (1714 -1789), a French painter specializing in seascapes who often depicted views of storms and shipwrecks. The scene is set on a rocky coast, near a village erected on the overhanging cliff; there is a strong storm in progress, which unleashes lightning, flashing from the top right, above some frightened figures of travelers, and directed towards the sailing ship navigating at the mercy of the strong waves. The sky is full of black clouds, although in the distance a glimpse of blue already seems to begin to open up. Restored and relined, the painting is presented in a style frame.
