Still Life of Flowers in a Garden  Translated
Description:
Still Life of Flowers with Putto and Fountain in a Garden Michele Antonio Rapous (Turin 1733-1819) Oil on canvas Important contemporary frame Late 18th century period Canvas 120 x 148 Frame 136 x 172 Excellent condition This magnificent still life, of remarkable scenic impact, stands out for its elegance and pictorial refinement. It is masterfully set outdoors in a garden and offers an extraordinary sense of depth and three-dimensionality. The author, in fact, thanks to a great pictorial ability, manages to give perfect clarity to the context in the foreground, and to create a hazy but very real effect to the entire opening of the background. The large size of the canvas increases the optical illusion of the distance between the garden and the horizon. The viewer is immediately struck by the Medici vase full of flowers depicted in the center of the painting, embraced by a Putto. The gaze then shifts downwards to capture the image of another floral composition placed on a pink drape under a gushing fountain. On the opposite side, a balustrade with other flowers delimits the garden. The pictorial characteristics of the work undoubtedly lead us to the exuberant but graceful style of the Turin-born Michele Antonio Rapous, who in his long activity adorned the most important palaces of the Piedmontese capital with his famous floral compositions. His paintings, inspired by French masters, were very successful and his workshop specialized in the creation of large-scale still lifes, always sumptuous and of great scenic effect, but with a compositional variation in continuous evolution. His countless works, in fact, never depict the same subject and even our canvas proposes an original scene, particularly pleasant and of great decorative value. The state of conservation of the painting is excellent, perfectly clean and professionally relined. The splendid contemporary frame enhances the importance of the work and has been restored in our laboratory. A certificate of authenticity and descriptive card are issued.
