Follower of Giovan Battista Foggini (1652-1725)
Bust of Ferdinando II de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany (1610-1670)
bronze sculpture
height: 75 cm
This bronze, probably made in
Florence as a decorative element for a Medici palace, is a later replica of Foggini's original, which does not lose the intensity and late Baroque vigor derived from Bernini's influence.
Ferdinando II is portrayed in adulthood.
The artist has captured his acute nature and lively intelligence in his large, wide eyes, spacious forehead, pronounced nose, fleshy lips, wavy mustache, and baldness compensated for by long hair left loose on his shoulders. Portrayed as a military leader with richly decorated armor, he also wears a generously draped cloak.
