Painting: Cleopatra dissolving a pearl in a cup of vinegar
Description:
Oil on canvas. Roman school of the second half of the 17th century. The scene recounts an episode from the love story between the Queen of Egypt and the Roman triumvir Antony: Cleopatra, to demonstrate her wealth and seduce the handsome general, prepares a sumptuous banquet, during which she chooses a pearl of inestimable value and dissolves it in vinegar, then offering the drink, considered a powerful aphrodisiac, to Antony. In the painting, the queen is about to put the pearl in the cup: the ribbon to which the pearl is tied is particularly noteworthy, reminiscent of that in Carlo Maratta's (1625 -1713) namesake painting. Restored and relined, the painting is presented in a late 19th-century wooden frame. Product Condition: Product in good condition, with small signs of wear. We try to present the actual state as completely as possible with the photos. If some details are not clear from the photos, what is reported in the description prevails.
