Mysterious Russian icon from the late 17th / early 18th century, depicting the Hodegetria Madonna
Description:
Mysterious Russian icon from the late 17th / early 18th century, depicting the Hodegetria Madonna, which typically represents the Mother of God holding the child and indicating him as the savior of humanity. Central Russia, probably the Shuya region. Of extreme rarity in its symbolism (the Virgin's hand pointing downwards, scepters, and also visible, in this rare case, is an interesting element at the center of the icon, namely a medallion with the burning bush. More often this dogmatic representation of the Mother of God appears as an individual image. Typical of this image is the eight-pointed star formed by two distinct elements, one red (the color of royalty), the other blue (a symbol of transcendence and related to all that is earthly). Another "atypical" element are the crowns that adorn the heads of the figures. This iconography is part of the "Unfading Rose" group, or ??d?? t? ?µ??a?t??. The most characteristic iconography includes a flower or flowering sprig in the Mother's hand, while the Child is dressed in regal clothes and carries a scepter. (cm.35 x 28). In virtually intact condition. Minimal conservative restorations.
