Flagellation
Embossed copper plate, 37 x 28 cm
Within Plexiglas frame 43.5 x 35 cm
The refined and rare sculpture made on an embossed copper plate depicts the flagellation of Jesus, an episode that occurred during the trial celebrated by the Roman procurator Pontius Pilate, narrated by the Canonical Gospels (Matthew 27:26; Mark 15:15; Luke 23:16; John 19:1).
The work under examination is characterized by its high formal quality and compositional skill. The variety of poses and the lively gestures of the figures give vitality and realism to the representation, conveying the sense of excitement of the moment and its profound meaning. The architectural definition of the scene is also very beautiful, where great care is given to details, such as the columns and capitals, and where the rendering of the coffered barrel vault gives depth and spatiality to the entire work.
The object is in good condition.
