Virgin and Child, Magdalene and St. Lucy
Description:
"Sacred conversation" Madonna with Child between Magdalene and Saint Lucy Oil on canvas Lombard School Late 16th century period Canvas 44 x 45 Frame 60 x 61 The theme of the Sacred Conversation began to spread in Italian painting towards the mid-15th century with the two splendid altarpieces by Beato Angelico and Piero della Francesca made respectively in 1440 and around 1470 and gradually replaced the form of the triptych and polyptych of medieval origin. It represented one of the great innovations of Renaissance sacred art, lending itself to more modern scenographic solutions than Gothic canons. The Virgin and Child is depicted seated, on a throne, often above a staircase, in the center of a closed or open space, between a variable number of Saints depicted standing at her sides. In this case, the work is small in size compared to the altarpieces and was evidently made for private devotion. The composition depicts the seated Madonna holding the blessing Child between Magdalene and Saint Lucy with their iconographic attributes. It is a very interesting and fascinating sixteenth-century canvas. It has been professionally relined and the paint layer is in excellent condition. Complete with a beautiful carved and gilded frame.
