Description:
Rare chest painted with a marbled background from the second half of the 18th century, in admirable condition, including the painting. Patina and signs of use consistent with its age. Minimal and limited pictorial integrations from a later period, executed perfectly. Giant Mountains (Riesengebirge), second half of the 18th century. Less likely, the early 19th century. Measures 115x66 cm (max. depth), height 75 cm. Can be matched with another of our splendid, contemporary and very similar cabinets. Notes. This type of painted furniture, used in provincial and rural residences throughout Central Europe, including the Alpine region, from the 17th century or even earlier, is now, when preserving the original painting, very rare and sought after, mostly preserved in museums and prestigious private collections. In particular, this "marbled" type, i.e. with the pictorial background aspiring to imitate marble, is the most desirable. Even the soft and pastel tones, almost reminiscent of the old painted furniture of the Marches, are among the rarest and most sought-after. From the examination of the pictorial motifs and the technique used, it is possible to identify the region of original provenance (specifically, the Giant Mountains).
