Austria, circa 1770. Wonderful chest of drawers with raised section, in German called Aufsatzkommode.
Description:
Austria, circa 1770. Wonderful chest of drawers with raised section, in German called Aufsatzkommode, a practical piece of furniture typical of Austrian culture, which acted as a sideboard or serving cabinet. The glazed upper section with inlays featuring rose and acanthus motifs, typical of the period, rests on a charming chest of drawers inlaid with festoons and geometric patterns, clearly in neoclassical style. The furniture is made of solid oak, with maple and stained maple wood inlays. The work, in practically integral condition with original hardware, is in first patina with shellac finish applied with a pad using a museum-standard technique. In the Austro-Hungarian Empire, these types of furniture were generally intended for small castles, noble provincial residences to which nobles moved to practice hunting. Measurements: total height with raised section cm. 192 Height of chest of drawers only (without the raised section) cm 89 Maximum width (chest of drawers) cm. 120 Width of raised section cm. 107 Maximum depth (chest of drawers) cm 58.5 Depth of raised section cm 30.
