Saint Peter

The protagonist of this sixteenth-century work is Saint Peter, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, as well as the first pope of the Catholic Church. Originally known as Simon, Peter was a humble fisherman from Capernaum who met Jesus through his brother Andrew. Jesus called him with the promise to make him a "fisher of men," and from then on, he was always by his side. In the painting, the Saint is easily recognizable by the large keys he holds in his hand, the access to the Kingdom of Heaven, which Jesus promised him when he founded his Church on him. In the Gospel according to Matthew (Mt 16:18-19), Jesus addresses the apostle with these words: "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the powers of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." Peter's primacy and authority were recognized by the other apostles: he was the first of them to perform miracles, baptize, and organize the Church. It is certain that he went to preach as far as Rome, where he died under the persecutions of Nero, between 64 and 67 AD. In the work, Peter's physiognomy does not differ from the traditional one, established as early as the 5th century based on the description of Eusebius of Caesarea (3rd-4th century), who presents him with curly hair and a short, frizzy beard. The clothes worn are simple: a tunic with bright ocher-yellow tones surmounted by a dark pallium that falls on his arm. Peter's expression is striking, as he hints at a serene smile and looks rapturously towards the sky, of whose kingdom he will soon be the custodian.
