Erwin Carl Wilhelm Günther (1864 - 1927) - Steamer and sailboats on the sea
Description:
Erwin Carl Wilhelm Günther (Hamburg, 1864 - Düsseldorf, 1927) Steamer and sailboats on the sea Oil on canvas, 65 x 100 cm Signed and dated "(19)15" lower left The painting is signed and dated "Günther Erwin (19)15" in the lower left. The artist was born in Hamburg in 1864, then studied at the Düsseldorf Academy. Long journeys in Europe and Africa provided him with subjects for his paintings, which he began to exhibit from 1891 in Munich and from 1893 in Berlin. His activity is almost entirely aimed at the representation of seascapes, which are the subject for which he is best known. Among the museums that preserve his paintings, we remember the Kunsthalle in Düsseldorf, his adopted city. The painting in question represents an example of his most typical production. It depicts two boats in the foreground and a steamer in the background, while on the right is a pier with its typical structures. All three of these boats, the first of which bears the inscription "Marie Stern", are leaving the shore heading for the open sea. Observing the steamer in the distance gives the perception that it is floating, as if propelled by the high waves that ripple the surface of the sea. The day, in fact, is windy, as evidenced not only by the waves, but also by the movement of the boats that seem to travel their route with some difficulty. Günther's palette is quite essential, so much so that the painting appears to be almost monochrome. Grays, in fact, even in different shades and combinations, are the protagonists of the palette, used in the boats, the pier, the long smoke of the steamer and the waves themselves. The painter's skill in a subject so congenial to him is evident in the representation of the boats, depicted with careful detail, but also in that of the sea surface, rippled by waves, which form a white foam. Subjects like these, with the sea as the protagonist, met with considerable fortune in the production of the early twentieth century. The object is in good condition.
