Tripod Vase Holder Paris Last Quarter 19th Century
Description:
Tripod vase holder in gilded bronzes and Sèvres ceramics, made on a model by Pierre Gouthière. Circular base in cobalt blue Sèvres porcelain, with golden decorations on the top and a myrtle leaf garland on the band; below, three gilded bronze feet with a spiral motif hold everything together. On the top rests the three bronze goat's feet with an inverted pine cone in the center; the tripod is contained by a band ornamented with Greek frets in the lower part, the uprights end with faun heads characterized by long beards and ram's horns, connected to each other by festoons of vine shoots and bunches of grapes. In the center, descending from above following a spiral trajectory, the figure of a snake with a body covered with scales and its mouth wide open. On the summit, it has a second pine cone element, opposed to the first, surmounted by a tuft of leaves arranged in a radial pattern and by the vase holder plate, the latter embellished with a Greek fret pattern and ending with an element with a perforated railing with an everted edge. These elements, originally separated by a missing Sèvres porcelain vase, were superimposed and fixed together at a later time. The base has the Sèvres manufacture mark.
