This refined chest of drawers was made in Piedmont around the mid-eighteenth century. Veneered in walnut wood, the chest of drawers is richly decorated with inlays with elegant baroque motifs of ramage and leaf volutes of great scenic effect. The inlays are in boxwood and burr wood, pyrographically processed to obtain greater three-dimensionality to the ornaments. The different colors of the wood essences create a play of light and dark that gives the furniture particular elegance. The top has a wavy and shaped profile. In the center, the inlays create geometric rocaille elements, acanthus leaves, and other phytomorphic subjects. Inscribed within a central element, with a mixtilinear frame in boxwood and burr, are inlaid two characters with grotesque features that the cabinetmaker has presumably taken from an engraving, as often happened in the Piedmontese workshops, and not only, of the time. The commode consists of four large drawers. The front is slightly curved and is connected to the sides by rounded uprights of great value, also decorated with inlays. Likewise, laterally the chest of drawers is embellished with inlays with, inside the central element, depictions of characters. The furniture rests on four feet with a shaped and curved line and is enriched by keyhole escutcheons and eight handles for opening the drawers in gilded and finely chiseled bronze. For its executive refinement and compositional elegance, this chest of drawers is easily placed in any environment, such as in a bedroom, a study, in an entrance and in the living room. It is suitable to be combined with antique furniture, as well as close to furniture of modern taste.
